Adena Schutzberg
Executive Editor,
Directions Magazine

Adena Schutzberg is Executive Editor of Directions Magazine and contributes to its widely-read weekly electronic newsletters and website. Before joining Directions Magazine, Schutzberg founded and edited GIS Monitor for nearly five years.

She is also the Principal of ABS Consulting Group, Inc., a GIS consulting firm providing services to clients including GIS software, data and imagery companies.

Before opening her own company, Schutzberg headed U.S. operations for UK-based Cadcorp, and held several positions at ESRI over eight years. She began her career heading Arthur D. Little’s CAD/GIS lab and teaching college geography. She holds a BA in Chemistry from the University of Chicago and an MS in Geography from Pennsylvania State University.

Afternoon Keynote Address

John Calkins has been with ESRI for 18 years and focuses on special projects that cut across the diversity of GIS applications and solutions around the world. Throughout the years he has focused on natural resources (forestry, petroleum), government, defense, intelligence, and science solutions. In 2000-01, he also consulted to CBS for the television series “The District” which was the first ever prime time television series utilizing a geographic information system. Other notable projects include establishing GIS in Antarctica at McMurdo Station and producing ESRI’s User Conference plenary sessions. Prior to joining ESRI, Mr. Calkins worked for Tenneco Oil Exploration and Production as a geological engineer.

The Map Contest held during the GIS/SIG Conference will feature two categories: Professional and Student. The winner of the Professional map contest will win a GPS unit. In its effort to promote education in GIS, GIS/SIG will present the winner of the Student map contest with a $100 Scholarship Award at the end of the Conference. GIS/SIG partnered with the Central New York Region of the American Society for Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing (CNYASPRS) to bring you a two-day joint conference. GIS/SIG presented its annual conference on April 16th, and the New York State Remote Sensing Symposium was hosted by CNYASPRS on the 17th. In recognition of our collaboration with CNYASPRS, the conference theme in 2003 was "Developing Partnerships-A Joint GIS/SIG and CNYASPRS Conference."
